Bistro 22 which is located on Highway 22 in Lake Zurich is one of the very best restaurants in Lake County. Kent, and Hugo are fantastic hosts who go the full ten yards to make sure every one of their guests is satisfied each night.
The French bistro style cooking is inspired, and the menu changes on a seasonal basis to make sure that the customer base never gets bored with the restaurants offerings. They offer an extensive wine list, and the offering from the bar will never disappoint.
Hot and cold appetizers include some excellent choices. Pan-seared crab cake leads the roster with an accompanying rouille that offers a little bit of peppery bite. The menu's mussels, a French staple, are lusciously plump, almost creamy. Their simmered broth brings together essences of tomatoes, garlic and shallots with herbs, butter and white wine.
As for entrees, bistro classics include the likes of coq au vin, braised in red wine with pearl onions, mushrooms and roasted potatoes. Black pheasant brings something more elegant, with spaetzle and what the French call a hunter's sauce with its woodsy flavor. Steak frites gets embellishment with intense cognac peppercorn sauce while rack of lamb is treated to the likes of rosemary and honey mustard, finished with parsley and garlic.
They are also known for their Lumiere menu which consists of small portions at a small price. Customers can mix and match the seasonal offerings. They are perfect for when you just want a taste, or you are not hungry enough for a full meal.
We love sitting at the bar for dinner when there is just two of us. The food is great, the conversation superb, and the attention to detail is great to find out in the suburbs. We had fresh softshell crab the other night served on cous cous with a butter sauce which was to die for.
Bistro 22 never disappoints so make it a part of your regular dining schedule.

The Gilmer Road House
The Gilmer Roadhouse located at the corner of Midlothian and Gilmer near Hawthorn Woods is a spot that you can't miss as you are driving by. It isn't much to look at even though it has character on the outside, and it isn't fancy on the inside either. What it does offer is the best Pizza in the area surrounded on the menu by a lot of quality offerings.
I have never been disappointed by this place, the burgers are great, the Friday Fish Fry is great, and the staff is very friendly. They have deep dish and thin crust pizza. The thin crust is what I crave since they get the crust just perfect, and the ample toppings are of the highest quality. We order at least one a week to bring home when we are too tired to cook, or eat out.
They don't deliver pizza, but that is just fine, call ahead on the phone and stop by the bar while you are waiting to have a cold beer and catch up with the locals. It is a friendly bar, and many of the patrons have been coming for over a decade.
The Gilmer also serves a breakfast on Saturday, and Sunday that gets real high marks. The omelets are very good and you should consider giving it a try.
If you are on a budget, the Gilmer isn't going to empty your wallet either. The prices are a real bargain for the quality of food you are going to receive.

Tom and Kathy's Lakeside Inn
Tom and Kathy's Lakeside Inn is located on Old McHenry Road on the scenic shores of Forest Lake. This place has a lot of old time charm and ambience. It reminds patrons of being up in the Northwoods of Wisconsin with it's knotty pine interior, and charming lodge look on the outside.
The restaurant sits right on the lake and there is a patio outside where you can soak up the tremendous view the place has to offer. Locals sometimes boat across the lake and tie up at the large dock on the shore. Tom and Kathy the proprietors are very friendly, and it is a favorite among the locals.
The star of the menu is the best cheeseburger in Lake County. They start with fresh ground chuck cooked on a century old cast iron grill while you watch. You can have it your way with any toppings you like including grilled onions, bacon, and an assortment of cheeses.
The french fries are extra special since they are fresh cut every day and cooked twice at two different temperatures so they come out just perfect.
If you are not in the mood for a burger they do have other sandwiches, appetizers, and a pretty good pizza.
This one of my favorite places, and I try to hit it once a week for a cheeseburger, and a couple of beers.
